The new reality of recruiting

Director Sarah Brown took part in ‘Recruitment: the new reality’, a roundtable hosted by the Architects’ Journal and recruitment specialists, Bespoke Careers.

The event brought together some of the UK’s leading practices to contribute their experiences on how the architecture industry is responding to recruitment in a changing job market.

The wide-ranging discussion ranged from the impact that the 2016 referendum and vote to leave has had on the profession, the skills shortage and strategies to retain staff; to a generational shift where an entrepreneurial approach and new skills in tech and BIM are elevating candidates’ appeal; to the challenges and barriers of recruiting staff from overseas and how this may influence the future growth of London.

The roundtable provided a valuable insight into some of the pressing issues faced by practices today and probed if architectural schools are sufficiently preparing students for working in the industry and practice life, as well as new initiatives such as apprenticeships which offer an alternative route to practice.
