Tate and Hindle has designed and delivered a large number of buildings in the UK since it was established in 1991. Andrew Tate and James Hindle founded the practice, bringing together their commercial and design experience. Simon Ricketts became a Director to help with the growth and development of the practice. Associate Directors are Harish Ratna, Sarah Brown, Mark Howard, Mike Jamieson and Juan Pinol. The practice currently employs over 30 architects, technicians and interior designers.
The Practice was relocated to our new offices above the historic Smithfield meat market in May 2005. The studio provides an exciting working environment and will support our continued growth. We have grown steadily and have a low turn-over of staff. Our Directors maintain an involvement throughout the duration of all projects. We try to maintain the team continuity through the life of a project wherever practicable.
Andrew Tate qualified as an architect in 1981. He began his career working for Prudential Assurance on a number of significant buildings in its pension fund portfolio including the £200M redevelopment of the Prudential's headquarters building in Holborn.
He set up Tate and Hindle Design in 1991, concentrating initially on Central London commercial projects.
Andrew has continued to work on a wide variety of refurbishment and new build projects as well as client strategies for large regeneration and mixed use schemes throughout the UK. Andrew has converted a water tower near Amersham into his family home. He used fast track commercial techniques and innovative products in its design.
The building continues to be featured in Channel 4's Grand Designs series.
In his spare time Andrew's interests include participating in Ironman triathlon events raising money for The Children's Trust.
James Hindle trained at the Glasgow School of Art (between 1974 and 1979 and in his final year won the Haldane Scholarship and the prestigious Royal Scottish Academy prize for architecture. After qualifying he worked at DY Davies for six years and, having specialised in the design and construction of high quality commercial buildings, became the director in charge of the company's city division.
James then joined London and Paris Properties in 1988 as director and for four years supervised the design and construction of its commercial development programme. This included a number of prestigious new build and refurbishment projects which totalled approximately £300M of investment value. He has completed numerous commercial office developments both as a client and an architect.
In 1991 James formed Tate and Hindle Design Limited with Andrew Tate.
Simon Ricketts joined Tate and Hindle in 1994, having worked for DEGW London for 5 years. He is an architect with a particular interest in the workplace and interiors - both new build and refurbishment. Simon particularly enjoys working closely with end users and his overriding ambition is to make a tangible difference to the way people are able to work and enjoy their environment.
His projects have included briefing for the amenities facilities at GreenPark, Reading; fit out for Wedlake Bell; LandSecurities Trillium public sector projects; retail refurbishment strategy for Sicilian Avenue, Bloomsbury; and the fit out of several floors at Citicorp in Canary Wharf for Sunguard.
Within Tate and Hindle, his role includes overseeing the implementation of the Quality Assurance system with the intention of maximising continuity and effectiveness in all projects.
