St. Georges House

St George’s House occupies a key gateway site in Ipswich. TateHindle were appointed by St George’s House LLP to prepare concept proposals leading to a planning application for a mixed use development comprising 12,000 sq ft of retail, 125 bed hotel and 46 apartment residential sheltered housing development.
The existing buildings on site are a variety of low rise outmoded retail units with rooftop car parking. The tired appearance of these buildings not only negatively impacts upon the town centre appearance but also on the residential roads to the rear of the site.

Working with the support of the local council, the new design maximises the usage of the site, making the project not only desirable for the local council but also commercially viable. Using a palette of materials suitable for the historic town environment, the scale and contemporary façades deliver a new landmark building properly connecting the town centre to residential and retail areas to the west.
